Lionel Messi etched his name in the annals of soccer history on Monday by netting his 17th career World Cup goal. This achievement marks the highest number of goals ever scored in the tournament. His milestone goal occurred during a Group J match against Austria.
However, controversy arose regarding the legitimacy of the goal. Peter Schmeichel, a commentator for FOX, criticized Egyptian referee Amin Mohamed Omar during the network’s halftime show. Schmeichel argued that the goal should not have been allowed due to a questionable penalty decision against Austria earlier in the game.
Schmeichel expressed, “I don’t think that goal should have stood.” He referred to a penalty issued for a kick from behind, which he believed warranted a free kick instead.
The incident leading to Messi’s record-breaking goal involved Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister tripping Austria’s Xaver Schlager from behind during a throw-in. Schlager fell, and soon after, Messi capitalized by scoring.
Schmeichel, a former goalkeeper for Denmark, insisted that the play deserved a free kick and should have been reviewed by VAR due to a clear and obvious referee error.
Despite Schmeichel’s objection, Argentina maintained a 1-0 lead and was close to commencing the tournament with two consecutive wins. They had previously beaten Algeria 3-0, with Messi delivering a hat trick in the opening match on June 16.
Messi’s total of four goals in the tournament’s early stages not only surpasses Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the all-time World Cup goals record but also makes him the first player to score in six consecutive World Cups.
Beyond his goal-scoring prowess, Messi is poised to become the tournament’s top assist-provider. He is currently tied with compatriot Diego Maradona for the most assists, having accumulated eight across five previous tournaments.
Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, will face Jordan in Dallas on Saturday at 10 p.m. to conclude the group stage.
