The tech company Meta, known for operating Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has initiated a major reorganization. This move aims to streamline its workforce and boost its focus on artificial intelligence (AI). On Wednesday, company spokesperson Erica Sackin confirmed that around 10% of Meta’s employees, approximately 8,000 people, have been informed of layoffs scheduled for May.
A source familiar with the company’s strategy, though not officially authorized to discuss it, revealed that an additional 7,000 employees will experience role changes. This reallocation will support Meta’s increased investment in AI projects. The source mentioned, “To focus more on AI they are moving 7,000 people to teams that focus on AI projects.” Details on specific team changes were not disclosed by Sackin.
Reuters initially reported these role reassignments, indicating that employees will join four new teams dedicated to developing AI tools and applications. Although NPR has not confirmed these details, it’s clear that Meta, like other technology giants, is heavily investing in AI. Companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are perceived as strong competitors in this space.
Meta’s capital expenditures for this year are projected to be nearly double those of the previous year, underscoring its commitment to AI development. This restructuring follows a trend of job cuts in the tech industry, coupled with increased focus and funding for AI initiatives.
The company is facing challenges beyond its internal restructuring. It has reduced emphasis on the “Metaverse,” a virtual reality project once championed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Moreover, Meta is contending with legal issues. Court cases in New Mexico and California have accused the platforms of negatively impacting the mental health of children and young people. In June, Meta will return to court as part of lawsuits filed by school districts. These legal actions allege that social media has contributed to a mental health crisis and addiction problems among students.
