The New York Mets secured a thrilling victory against the New York Yankees in the first Subway Series matchup of the season. The game concluded dramatically on Sunday afternoon with rookie Carson Benge as the central figure.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, with runners on first and third and one out, Benge hit a chopper over the head of Yankees reliever Tim Hill. Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann, the Yankee infielders, collided while attempting to field the ball, allowing Marcus Semien to dash home and score the winning run. The Mets emerged victorious with a 7-6 win.
“Once it went over the pitcher’s head, I kind of knew,” said Benge after the game.
The Yankees had held a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. However, Tyrone Taylor stepped up for the Mets, delivering a crucial performance. With Benge and Juan Soto on base and two outs, he launched a pitch off David Bednar into left field, tying the game with his third home run of the season.
“I didn’t know it was going to stay fair,” Taylor remarked. “I kind of waited there to see if it would.”
Meanwhile, the Yankees endured a challenging nine-game road trip, going 2-7. They now prepare for a seven-game homestand against their American League East rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays. Aaron Judge, a key player for the Yankees, emphasized the need to maintain focus.
“Guys are playing tough and making the plays they need to but just coming up a little bit short,” said Judge. “We’ve got to have a short memory, move on and get ready because we’ve got a big division opponent coming in.”
Reliever David Bednar’s performance was scrutinized, as he blew a save opportunity for the second time in 12 attempts, raising his ERA to 4.95. “Overall, it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot,” said Bednar. “It’s just very frustrating.”
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised his team’s perseverance. “We get down. We get punched in the face. We get back up,” Mendoza stated. “Today was a perfect example when, like I said, we didn’t play our best game and we still are able to shake hands at the end.”
