Victory for Trump’s Endorsed Candidate
Mike Mazzei, a former state senator, has emerged victorious in securing the Republican nomination for governor in Oklahoma, as projected by NBC News. Mazzei narrowly defeated his opponent, state Attorney General Gentner Drummond, by approximately 2,000 votes in a tight GOP primary runoff. President Donald Trump had endorsed Mazzei, expressing him as his preferred candidate in the race.
Tight Race in Primary and Runoff
The June primary initially saw Drummond finishing ahead of Mazzei by just over 1,000 votes. With no candidate achieving a majority, the race advanced to a runoff. During the period leading up to the runoff, Drummond managed to out-raise and out-spend Mazzei. Drummond’s campaign reported raising $2.3 million between the mid-June primary and the runoff, while Mazzei raised $816,000. Both candidates contributed significant personal loans to their campaigns, with Mazzei lending $11 million and Drummond $3 million.
Trump’s Support for Mazzei
Trump first endorsed Mazzei back in May, supporting his bid to succeed term-limited GOP Governor Kevin Stitt. The former president remained vocal about his support for Mazzei, using Truth Social to criticize Drummond and promote Mazzei as the right choice for the state. Trump expressed concerns about Drummond, suggesting he lacked the values representative of Oklahoma and urging voters to cast their ballots for Mazzei.
Contentions Over Aluminum Plant
Drummond faced criticism from Trump for opposing the construction of the largest aluminum smelter in Inola, Oklahoma. Citing environmental and public health concerns, Drummond aimed to block the project, whereas Trump praised the plant for its potential to produce jobs and contribute significantly to Oklahoma and the nation.
Mazzei supported the aluminum plant construction, aligning with Trump’s perspective.
Beef Imports Disagreement
Recently, Drummond disagreed with Trump regarding the waiver of tariffs on certain beef imports. He argued against the decision, suggesting that importing cheap beef negatively impacts Oklahoma’s cattlemen, ranchers, and farmers. This stance aligns with concerns expressed by GOP lawmakers in states with large cattle-ranching communities.
Impact of Trump’s Endorsement
While Trump’s endorsement continues to be influential in GOP politics, he faced challenges in governor’s races, with five of his supported candidates failing to win their primaries this year. However, Mazzei’s primary victory positions him as a strong contender in the upcoming general election, considering Oklahoma’s predominantly Republican voter base.
Upcoming General Election
Mazzei will compete against Democratic state Representative Cyndi Munson in the November general election. Given the state’s political leanings, Mazzei is considered the favorite to win.
