Minnesota Governor Tim Walz faces criticism for opposing President Donald Trump’s decision on energy policy. Walz issued an executive order to block mining permits in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeast Minnesota. This action contrasts with Trump’s earlier legislation reversing a similar ban from the Biden administration.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., criticized the move. He described it as “stupid” and “dangerous,” arguing that the executive order increases reliance on foreign minerals. Emmer stated it also endangers jobs in northern Minnesota and national security.
The legislation overturned by Trump had support from Rep. Pete Stauber, R-Minn. Walz’s order specifically targets mining of copper and nickel, which are essential for various industries, from electric vehicles to military equipment.
The Duluth Complex in northeastern Minnesota is the largest undeveloped source of nickel and copper in North America. Emmer believes not utilizing these resources disadvantages the U.S. compared to China’s metal mining capabilities.

Environmental groups support Walz’s decision, citing threats to the Boundary Waters from surrounding mining activity. Ingrid Lyons from Save The Boundary Waters praised Walz for protecting the area and encouraging the state legislature to secure long-term safeguards.
Emmer countered environmentalists by underscoring widespread commitment to environmentalism. He insisted that mining in Minnesota is preferable due to strict environmental regulations, ensuring minimal harm.
