Morocco Defeats Netherlands in World Cup Shootout

In a thrilling World Cup match in Guadalupe, Mexico, Morocco eliminated the Netherlands in a penalty shootout, securing a 3-2 victory after a 1-1 draw. Ismael Saibari scored the decisive goal for Morocco, sending the Dutch to their earliest World Cup exit.

With the shootout tied at 2-2 after four rounds, Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a crucial save against Crysencio Summerville, swatting away the attempt with his left hand. Saibari then sealed the win by sending his shot into the low left corner, with Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen moving in the opposite direction. Celebrating his success, Saibari was surrounded by jubilant teammates.

Earlier in the shootout, as Morocco trailed 1-0, Verbruggen seemed to stop Soufiane Rahimi’s attempt. However, the ball deflected off his leg and crossed the line, resulting in a goal. Morocco’s head coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, expressed that their efforts on the field were rewarded. “We give all the energy that we have on the field. Rahimi’s goal could have not been a goal, but it went in thankfully,” he said.

The Netherlands had consistently advanced to at least the Round of 16 in their previous 11 World Cup appearances, with a quarterfinal finish in Qatar four years ago. Morocco previously made history by being the first African team to reach the semifinals. This year’s expanded tournament featured 32 teams in the knockout stage for the first time.

Looking ahead, Morocco will face co-host Canada in the Round of 16 on Saturday in Houston. The Atlas Lions have a recent victory against Canada, defeating them 2-1 in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. In Monday’s match, Morocco maintained an aggressive strategy, while the Netherlands focused on counterattacks. “I think Morocco has gained everybody’s respect now,” said Ouahbi, who became head coach in March.

Despite the tough loss, Cody Gakpo scored for the Netherlands in the 72nd minute, with an assist from Summerville. After this goal, a heartwarming moment saw the Dutch bench embrace Gakpo, who was emotional following the recent loss of his unborn child with partner Noa van der Bij. Morocco responded with Issa Diop’s equalizing goal in the 91st minute. Chemsdine Talbi sent a cross from the left, allowing Diop to score with a header that left Verbruggen helpless.

In extra time, neither team created strong scoring chances. Dutch head coach Ronald Koeman introduced Justin Kluivert, renowned for his penalty skills, only to watch him miss his shot. Koeman commented, “The last substitution I made was to bring in Justin (Kluivert) because he’s one of the best at penalty shootouts. But he missed his penalty and that’s even more bitter for him and for us.” This marked the third consecutive World Cup where the Netherlands faced elimination through a penalty shootout.

Earlier that day, another Round of 32 match between Paraguay and Germany also ended with a penalty shootout. Following their victory, Ouahbi encouraged his team, stating, “We need to be telling ourselves that no one can stop us. Nobody is unbeatable. If we get things wrong, we’ll go home.”
