The Israel Day Parade in New York City took place on Sunday with significant political attendance, although Mayor Zohran Mamdani chose to abstain. Leading the parade was Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who marched as grand marshal, alongside prominent figures including Governor Kathy Hochul and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The parade, held annually, is a key occasion for political leaders to unite in celebrating Israel. For decades, mayors and governors have joined the thronging revelers on Fifth Avenue. However, Mayor Mamdani announced last Thursday that he would not participate, citing his stance on the Israeli government.
I said on the campaign trail that I wouldn’t be attending the parade, and I’ve made my views on the Israeli government abundantly clear,Mamdani declared during a press briefing.
His absence marks a significant deviation from longstanding mayoral tradition. In contrast, Tisch, who is Jewish, expressed her enthusiasm for the parade by pledging her support alongside Mamdani at the same press conference.
The mayor’s decision attracted criticism, particularly from New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman, who accused Mamdani of being anti-Israel.
I think that he’s an anti-Semite. I think he’s anti-Israel,Blakeman remarked. One of the first things he did as mayor was he watered down the definition of antisemitism. He speaks out against Israel all the time.
Blakeman argued that while the mayor criticizes Israel, he remains silent about countries like Iran, Russia, and China, known for suppressing human rights.
So we don’t want to see him marching here, because we don’t want a wolf in sheep’s clothing marching in our parade,Blakeman added.
Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, made note of the large turnout, underscoring the strong ties between New York and Israel.
While the mayor chose to boycott the event and turn his back on tens of thousands of Jews and supporters of Israel, the public came in droves to prove that the connection to Israel is stronger than any political campaign,Danon stated, reiterating the indestructible bond between the city and Israel.
State Attorney General Leticia James joined other notable political leaders in attendance. Before the parade, Schumer addressed the continuing rise of antisemitism globally.
And now we are seeing an ugly resurgence of antisemitism across the world, driven by the same lies and libels that have tormented the Jewish people for generations,Schumer said.Except now they’re transmitted at the speed of a fiber optic internet connection.
