Initial Findings of Plane Crash Investigation in Missouri

Federal safety investigators have released a preliminary report concerning the plane crash in Missouri, which served a skydiving outing and resulted in the loss of 12 lives. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), engine failure was not a factor in the crash.

The NTSB’s report, issued Thursday, based on initial inspections of the wreckage and flight records, did not flag any safety or mechanical failures contributing to the accident. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff on a clear day.

Engine and Fuel Assessment

Investigations indicated no pre-crash mechanical malfunctions or failures in the engine. The NTSB noted the engine was producing power at the time of the crash. Jeff Guzzetti, president of Guzzetti Aviation Risk Discovery, remarked he initially suspected an engine problem but was surprised by the findings.

Fuel samples from the truck showed the fuel to be clear of sediment or debris. The airplane met the weight and balance standards set by the skydiving business operators. The weather and pilot conditions were also found to be acceptable, with the experienced pilot holding over 4,100 flight hours.

Technical Specifications and Ongoing Investigation

The plane lacked a crashworthy voice or data recorder, which is not required for planes like this. However, the authorities recovered damaged GoPro cameras from the wreckage. The investigation is ongoing, as a final report typically takes a year or more to compile.

The crash occurred south of Kansas City, when the Pacific Aerospace 750XL took off from Butler Memorial Airport at 11:25 a.m. During its initial climb, the plane performed a gradual left turn, causing both wings to become almost perpendicular to the ground. This position resulted in a lack of aerodynamic lift, which investigators need to further examine.

Family and Industry Reactions

Some family members witnessed the crash, and the incident claimed the life of Jen Sharp, technology director at the United States Parachute Association. Skydive Kansas City expressed sorrow, calling the crash a “devastating loss.”

The NTSB has previously raised concerns about the oversight of skydiving operators, pointing out poor maintenance as a common issue. Despite recommendations, the FAA has not yet strengthened its regulatory system. However, a committee was established in April to propose ways to enhance skydiving safety.

The United States Parachute Association asserts Skydive Kansas City adheres to global safety standards and FAA maintenance requirements. Despite human error being the majority factor in civilian deaths, the skydiving industry maintains a strong safety record. Last year, 3.5 million jumps were completed, with 16 civilian fatalities.

The crashed plane was built in 2010 and had completed two successful flights earlier the same day. It is designed for single-pilot operations and is popular in skydiving circles.
