Noah Mendez Shines as Goalkeeper for St. Laurence

Noah Mendez transferred from Mount Carmel to St. Laurence after his sophomore year. Due to transfer rules, he couldn’t play varsity soccer last fall. Watching the Vikings finish as the Class 3A state runner-up, Mendez anticipated stepping in as the starting goalkeeper for his senior year.

Mendez expressed his readiness for the role. He learned the team’s standards through some junior varsity matches, preparing himself for the upcoming season. “Sitting out last year was tough, but I knew the challenges ahead,” he shared.

His predictions proved correct. Mendez delivered an impressive performance in a recent match, securing a 1-0 victory against Lockport in the Windy City Ram Classic championship at Reavis in Burbank. He made eight saves, including a crucial stop on a penalty kick.

Jesus Salazar scored the sole goal for St. Laurence, assisted by Adan Gutierrez. The victory marked the team’s first win in the 32-team tournament. Mendez’s defensive teammates included Pauly Rzadkosz, Heriberto Luna, Andrew Martinez, and Josue Garcia.

The turning point was after Lockport’s Orlando Dominguez was fouled in the box. Mendez blocked Aleko Kolliniatis’ penalty kick, then quickly defended another shot off the rebound. “I was determined to save it,” Mendez stated confidently.

Salazar noticed Mendez’s growing self-assurance. “Noah has gained confidence and proves himself as a vital player,” he remarked. Though slightly undersized, Mendez consistently makes bold plays.

Salazar scored the game-winning goal, cutting into the box and finishing from 15 yards out. “This was an exhilarating game,” he commented, praising the team’s first Windy City Ram Classic victory.

Mendez resumed goalkeeping after a brief break in middle school, reaffirming his passion for the role. “I’ve always known my place is in the net,” he affirmed.

St. Laurence coach Jaime Alonso is pleased with Mendez’s growth and motivation. “Missing last year ignited a fierce determination in him. He shows it every day,” Alonso said.

Mendez’s commitment is evident in his approach. “I have one year to make an impact,” he emphasized. He aims to perform each play and each game with utmost dedication.
