Sports Milestones
On June 8, 1971, Danny Goodwin, a standout catcher from Peoria Central High School, was selected with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft by the Chicago White Sox. Despite the high expectations, Goodwin opted not to sign with the team. Instead, he chose to pursue a college career at Southern University. By 1975, he was again the No. 1 draft pick, this time for the California Angels. Goodwin played seven seasons in Major League Baseball.
Another significant date in Chicago sports was in 1976, when the legendary Bobby Orr joined the Chicago Blackhawks. Known for his outstanding career with the Boston Bruins, Orr’s time on the ice with the Blackhawks was limited by knee injuries. In 1978, he transitioned to an assistant coach role with the team.
Fast forward to 2013, Patrick Kane delivered an unforgettable performance for the Blackhawks. He scored his third goal during double overtime, securing the Western Conference title against the Los Angeles Kings.
Weather Records
Chicago’s weather archives for June 8 reveal a high temperature of 97 degrees in 1933 and a low of 42 degrees in 1885. Notably, 1958 saw a significant precipitation event with 2.07 inches of rain, while a trace of snowfall was recorded in 2015.
Chicago Innovations
In 1869, Ives W. McGaffey, a Chicago inventor, secured a patent for an innovative cleaning device known as a “sweeping machine”. This early version of a vacuum cleaner had a unique design with a hand crank. The vacuum was noted for its lightweight and compact form but came with a hefty price tag of $25. Many of these models, sold in Chicago and Boston, were likely lost in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
Theater Achievements
The year 2025 marked a momentous occasion for Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Their production “Purpose,” written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, received accolades at the Tony Awards. The production earned two awards, including Best Play, and was honored with a Pulitzer Prize. “Purpose” later enjoyed a successful run on Broadway.
