Novo Nordisk has announced a significant reduction in the list prices for its diabetes and weight-loss medications, Ozempic and Wegovy. Dr. Mahsa Tehrani, a board-certified rheumatologist, discussed this decision on ‘America Reports.’
Meanwhile, a new weight-loss trend has emerged where people consume a mixture of warm water and unflavored gelatin just before meals. Promoted as a budget-friendly appetite suppressant on social media, this method is being compared to GLP-1 weight-loss medications, though experts advise caution.
How Gelatin Affects Appetite
Dietitian Erin Palinski-Wade explained that when gelatin enters the stomach, the acidic environment helps it form a semi-gelled mixture. This increase in the mixture’s volume can stretch the stomach walls, sending signals to the brain indicating fullness. Additionally, the protein in gelatin triggers a hormone that slows eating.
Expert Warnings Against Overreliance
While some call this method ‘natural Ozempic,’ Palinski-Wade emphasized the exaggerated comparison. Gelatin does not mimic medications at the receptor level, nor does it have fat-burning properties. It merely fills the stomach to help reduce calorie intake.
Nutritional risks exist if gelatin is relied upon as a dietary staple. Although high in protein, it lacks the essential amino acid tryptophan, which is crucial for muscle health. Therefore, it should only be used as an appetite support tool before meals.
Guidelines for Safe Consumption
For those interested, Palinski-Wade suggests mixing one tablespoon of plain gelatin powder in hot water, diluting with room-temperature water or herbal tea, and consuming it 15 to 30 minutes before one meal daily. This method should be avoided by individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing kidney disease or animal allergies without medical consultation.
Ultimately, though gelatin can aid in portion control, it is not a miraculous weight-loss solution.
