October Social Security Payment Schedule and Updates

53 minutes ago 0

Millions of Social Security beneficiaries in the United States will be receiving their monthly payments in October. However, payment dates vary, raising the question of when your payment will arrive.

Over 70 million Americans receive benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA), which include retirement, spousal, survivor, or disability benefits. Given the large number of recipients, payments are staggered throughout the month. The schedule depends on the type of benefit, the duration of claiming, and often, the recipient’s birthday.

Average Payments
As of July, the average Social Security retirement payment is $2,031.74, while Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients receive an average of $736.54.

October 2026 Payment Schedule

Social Security payments will be distributed on the following dates:

  • October 1: SSI benefit payments.
  • October 2: Payments for retired workers, spouses, and survivors who started benefits before May 1997, or those receiving both Social Security and SSI.
  • October 14: Payments for birthdays between 1st and 10th.
  • October 21: Payments for birthdays between 11th and 20th.
  • October 28: Payments for birthdays between 21st and 31st.

Double Payment for SSI
SSI is provided to individuals aged 65 or older with low or no income, or those younger than 65 with a permanent physical or mental disability. This month, SSI recipients will receive two payments. The usual payment is on the first, but the November payment will be early, on October 30, given November 1 is a Sunday. Payments are made on weekdays only.

“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment,” stated the SSA.

Although recipients will receive two payments in October, it’s not a duplicate payment; hence, there’s no need to report it.

Annual COLA Adjustment

Starting October 14, recipients will learn their annual increase for 2027. The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) prevents benefits from losing value due to inflation. This applies to various benefits, including retirement, survivor, and disability payments, and SSI.

The 2026 COLA was 2.8 percent. It’s based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The SSA calculates COLA by comparing the average CPI-W for July, August, and September against the same months the previous year.

Estimates suggest a COLA increase of 3.4 to 3.6 percent in 2027. The Senior Citizens League places it at 3.5 percent. AARP forecasts 3.6 percent, potentially increasing monthly benefits by around $75.

The final COLA figure may change based on September’s inflation data. The official 2027 COLA announcement is slated for October 14, 2026, following the BLS’s release of September data at 8:30 a.m. ET.
