Oregon Quarterback Injured After Late Hit

Oregon quarterback Dante Moore was carted off the field following a late hit during a game against USC at the Coliseum. The incident took place on Saturday, and USC quickly announced a suspension for their linebacker, Desman Stephens II, who received a one-game suspension for his involvement.

The play unfolded when Stephens charged toward Moore, who attempted to slide late. Stephens did not alter his trajectory and made contact with Moore’s head. Following the hit, Stephens celebrated, which caused outrage among Oregon players and fans. The incident nearly led to a confrontation on the field and was captured by NBC cameras. Moore required medical attention and was transported to a hospital by ambulance.

Stephens was ejected for targeting, but new NCAA rules permitted him to remain on the sideline. He continued to encourage his team during the second half. Oregon coach Dan Lanning described the hit as “disgusting,” while USC coach Lincoln Riley and Lanning both stated they did not witness Stephens’ reaction.

“Desman’s actions in the game were unacceptable and do not reflect USC Football or his character,” Riley said in a statement. He noted that Stephens would miss the next game against Washington and reiterated the Trojans’ support for Moore’s recovery.

Stephens also issued a personal apology. “I sincerely apologize for my actions during the game,” he stated. “Seeing a player injured this way is incredibly serious, and my reaction was inappropriate and inexcusable. There is no justification for smiling or celebrating while another player receives medical attention.” Stephens emphasized his commitment to learning from the incident.

Oregon has yet to provide an official update on Moore’s status. However, CBS Sports reported that he suffered a concussion, and Pete Nakos from On3.com mentioned that Moore was cleared to return to Eugene on the team plane.
