Pakistan conducted fresh airstrikes in Afghanistan overnight, resulting in at least 10 casualties, primarily children, according to the United Nations mission in Afghanistan. The Pakistani government claimed the strikes targeted militant groups responsible for attacks on Pakistan. In contrast, Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government accused Pakistan of aggression and stated that the strikes affected civilian areas, causing deaths among women and children.
The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) verified the death of 10 civilians, mostly children, and reported nine injured. While UNAMA did not explicitly blame Pakistan for the strikes, no other nation has claimed responsibility for recent aerial attacks in Afghanistan.
“UNAMA has confirmed that at least 10 civilians were killed, most of them children, and 9 people injured in airstrikes,”the mission stated on social media.
The airstrikes targeted Afghanistan’s Kunar and Helmand provinces. Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for Afghanistan’s regime, condemned the bombing and said three civilian homes were destroyed, labeling it an act of aggression.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Information gave a different account, stating the operations were intelligence-driven and precisely aimed at militant hideouts. According to their report, 22 terrorists were killed, and large caches of weapons and ammunition were destroyed. The ministry emphasized that maximum precautions were taken to avoid collateral damage. They confirmed their determination to continue such operations to eliminate terrorist threats from Afghanistan.
From Helmand province, videos emerged showing locals searching through debris left by the bombings. In Kunar province, Ebad Khan described how one strike destroyed a new home, killing all six family members inside, including children. The family had only moved to the area a day earlier, bringing their children and livestock.
This year has seen an increase in cross-border conflicts between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pakistan has conducted several airstrikes inside Afghanistan, responding to accusations from both sides that each shelters terrorist groups that target civilians and security forces. These ongoing clashes have resulted in over 1,100 civilian casualties, as reported by UNAMA.
Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan remain tense due to mutual accusations of harboring terrorist groups along their shared border, contributing to the prolonged conflict and instability in the region.
