Ed Catmull, cofounder of Pixar, offers valuable career guidance for those concerned about AI’s impact. In a conversation with Higgsfield AI CEO Alex Mashrabov, Catmull emphasized the importance of embracing technological changes in the creative industry.
“The key is, besides learning the craft, to accept that change is inevitable,” Catmull stated. He urged creatives to learn, collaborate with toolmakers, and contribute to shaping the future landscape.
Catmull believes that overcoming AI’s current limitations could lead to breakthroughs. “Frustrations often signal the need for solutions,” he remarked.
Catmull’s journey began in 1979 when he joined Lucasfilm to spearhead its computer division. Later in 1986, Steve Jobs purchased the division, establishing Pixar with Catmull as cofounder and president.
With a career in advancing computer animation, Catmull understands technological shifts bring both opportunities and challenges. He noted, “Each shift comes with new possibilities and problems, but adaptation ensures progress.” He drew parallels to the internet’s rise, highlighting its role in democratizing information and disinformation alike.
Catmull urged engaging with AI’s development, posing questions about our role in shaping its utility. As the workforce questions AI’s impact on job security, experts suggest AI will transform roles rather than replace them entirely, at least for now.
Concerns about AI’s potential to erode skills, especially judgment and problem-solving, remain. However, engaging with technology could foster growth and adaptation in the face of AI’s evolution.
