WASHINGTON, N.J. — A small town in New Jersey could play a pivotal role in shaping Congress during President Donald Trump’s remaining term. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., rallied GOP supporters in Washington, D.C., urging them to back Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., in his re-election bid for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District.
Kean, pursuing his third term, represents the district housing Trump’s Bedminster golf course, a significant location for the former president. Johnson highlighted the race’s significance, stating, “We consider this a top three race.” He expressed confidence that despite substantial monetary opposition, Kean would prevail.
“They’re investing tons of money to try to take [Kean] down, but they are not going to be successful,” Johnson emphasized.
This district stands as a crucial battleground. In 2024, Trump won it narrowly by two points, while Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill claimed it in 2025 by a similar margin.
The upcoming election provides Democrats a chance to send former Navy helicopter pilot Rebecca Bennett to the House. Success here, where few seats are politically neutral, could impact which party controls the House next year.
Bennett aims to defeat the GOP incumbent by building a diverse coalition. Her spokesperson, Carly Jones, countered Kean’s accusations, stating Bennett’s active church participation inspired her dedication to public service.
“Rebecca is an active member of her local church and talks openly on the campaign trail about her faith,” Jones asserted.
Kean, with legislative achievements under both Biden and Trump, asserts he can win. His event featured no party affiliation, illustrating his bipartisan approach.
Republicans hope to further Trump’s agenda, focusing on reducing government waste. Johnson cited the far-left insurgency within the Democratic Party as a reason to prevent their control of the House.
“It’s a challenge to the very foundational principles of America,” Johnson warned.
Absent earlier this year due to depression, Kean introduced legislation supporting easier access to mental healthcare upon his return. Bennett respects his absence’s cause but criticized his stock trading during that period.
Kean faces allegations of profiting millions from stock trades. Bennett, a military veteran, is determined to combat corruption and rising costs burdening New Jersey families.
