1 hour ago 0

On the first day of early voting in Atlanta, voters expressed frustration with President Trump influencing their election plans. NPR observed two focus groups consisting of 12 Georgians who had shifted their support from Biden in 2020 to Trump in 2024. Notably, 11 out of 12 voters expressed disappointment with Trump’s performance, with 10 regretting their vote.

Charles P., 43, noted the lack of positives in Trump’s administration, citing worsening inflation, more conflicts, and unyielding tariffs. Richard A., a 56-year-old Republican, mentioned struggles like food crises, war with Iran, and family separations due to ICE immigration policies. These sentiments echo Trump’s declining approval ratings and challenging midterm prospects for Republicans.

Trump has increased campaign activities, advocating for GOP control in Washington. These monthly focus groups, conducted by Engagious and Nelson Recruiting, provide insights into voter sentiment, offering a glimpse into decision-making ahead of Election Day.

Shifting Support to Democrats

Rich Thau, President of Engagious, highlighted that more swing voters are letting Trump’s influence guide their decisions. Seven out of 12 voters planned to support Democrats due to discontent with Trump. Karla S., a 49-year-old Democrat, decided to vote Democrat across the board following disappointment with the current administration. Cedric, a 41-year-old independent, sought alternatives not aligned with Trump, preferring candidates who oppose Trump’s policies.

Ten participants intend to support Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, with some emphasizing their desire to keep him in office specifically to avoid Trump alignment.

Restoring Order

Some voters believe Democratic control of Congress could stabilize the country and its economy. Thau shared that voters feel Democrats might better manage Trump’s actions, boosting confidence in the economy. Thomas M., a 65-year-old independent, hoped for a Democratic Congress to challenge Trump, while Jennifer W., a 43-year-old Republican, expressed concerns about Trump having unchecked power if Republicans remain in control.
