Portal Lounge Revolutionizes Airport Experience at MSP

3 weeks ago 0

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has introduced a new and innovative space, the Portal Lounge, aimed at transforming travelers’ downtime into an engaging pre-flight experience. Opened on May 28, Portal Lounge is the latest venture from Jordan and Emma Walbridge, creators of the Gameway airport gaming concept. Their initiatives already operate across multiple U.S. airports, with plans for expansion.

Innovative Approach to Airport Lounges

Portal Lounge offers a different atmosphere compared to traditional airport lounges, which often emphasize silence and exclusivity. Instead, this lounge prioritizes energy, entertainment, and technology. The 3,800-square-foot space accommodates around 114 guests and features a unique portal-inspired entrance. Inside, visitors can enjoy cinematic lighting, art deco interiors, curated music, custom furnishings, and social seating.

Gaming Stations for Pre-Flight Fun

One standout feature is the array of gaming stations available. Travelers can select from nearly 30 titles for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and custom-built PCs. These stations offer various gameplay options, catering to both casual and competitive interests.

Emma Walbridge highlighted that their previous Gameway initiative demonstrated the demand for interactive spaces during airport downtime. She emphasized the desire of travelers to escape traditional waiting areas in favor of engaging environments.

Robotic Bartender: A Blend of Drink and Entertainment

Another highlight of Portal Lounge is the introduction of a robotic bartender, marking a first in U.S. airport lounges. Developed in Italy, the robot serves both as drink service and entertainment, preparing cocktails and mocktails alongside a conventional bar program.

According to Jordan Walbridge, technology at Portal Lounge enhances rather than overwhelms the experience. It touches all elements, including check-in, entertainment, lighting, music, and gaming, creating a seamless and immersive atmosphere.

Local Touch in Food and Beverage

Portal Lounge aims to improve airport dining. The menu features chef-driven dishes, regional drinks, and Minnesota-inspired cocktails. The “Lag Free,” a Minnesota margarita, and “Prince’s Lemonade,” a zero-proof cocktail, provide a local flair and connection to Minneapolis.

Changing the Airport Lounge Scene

Traditional airport lounges offered quiet seating, snacks, Wi-Fi, and occasional drinks. Portal Lounge, however, aims to elevate this experience by integrating games, food, music, and even robot-made beverages. The lounge operates independently from airline-specific clubs and provides access through Priority Pass and select credit card programs, with walk-in prices based on availability.

The approach at Portal Lounge addresses travelers’ desire for more engaging ways to spend their time before boarding, making long layovers and delays more enjoyable.

Benefits at MSP

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport serves as an ideal spot for this concept, handling approximately 36 million passengers in 2025. This provides ample opportunity for travelers to appreciate the lounge’s offerings and take advantage of their downtime.

A New Trend in Airport Experience

Portal Lounge is indicative of a shift in travelers’ expectations. Many now seek comfort and entertainment during airport stays, without sacrificing convenience or missing flights. Emma Walbridge believes that changing how travelers perceive and use their airport time is integral to the lounge’s appeal.

For those passing through MSP, Portal Lounge offers a chance to embrace a tech-savvy, socially driven space with gaming, food, drinks, and music before setting off on their flight.
