Potential Impeachment and Political Developments Surrounding Pete Hegseth

53 minutes ago 0

Nancy Lacore, a newly elected Democratic representative and retired Navy admiral, has addressed the potential impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Lacore, who was dismissed by Hegseth as chief of the Navy Reserve last year, cited numerous possible reasons for impeachment. During an interview with CBS News’ Face the Nation, she predicted the resolution of the issue before she assumes office. Lacore gained her congressional seat in South Carolina’s 1st District by highlighting Hegseth’s Pentagon leadership during her campaign.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has shown support for a Republican-led effort to impeach Hegseth. He stated on Sunday his intent to back a forthcoming resolution by Republican Representative Thomas Massie, saying the defense secretary must be ousted.

Impeachment Possibilities

When asked about potential impeachable offenses by Hegseth, Lacore suggested several possibilities. She referenced issues linked to the war in Iran and military actions near Venezuela, citing corruption and lack of strategy as comprehensive problems.

Lacore criticized Hegseth’s qualifications, deeming him the most unqualified defense secretary. She accused him of jeopardizing national security and impairing military readiness, emphasizing his focus should be redirected to strategy and preparedness.

The Personal Dimension

Lacore’s stance carries a personal element. Hegseth removed her from a top Navy Reserve position in 2025, ending her 35-year career abruptly. Lacore noted the absence of an explanation for her dismissal, a mystery shared among other high-ranking officers.

Despite the setback, Lacore’s transition to politics saw her win a traditionally Republican stronghold. Her campaign highlighted her military credentials and opposition to Hegseth’s leadership. Lacore was previously cautious about committing to an impeachment stance but emphasized voters’ affordability concerns.

Growing Impeachment Support

Republican Thomas Massie plans to reignite his impeachment initiative against Hegseth, having previously introduced a related resolution. The document included allegations against unauthorized military actions and criticized Hegseth for firing senior military officials.

Massie has said he will avoid pursuing impeachment provided Hegseth resigns. He urged President Trump to replace Hegseth while Republicans still hold Senate control.

Jeffries affirmed his support for Massie’s resolution on ABC News, stating that Hegseth’s actions compromised national security and resulted in a costly war in Iran.

Other Republicans, including James Comer, have expressed concerns about Hegseth’s strategic decisions, while Senator Thom Tillis confessed regret over confirming him.

Trump’s Position and Future Implications

President Donald Trump has remained supportive of Hegseth despite the mounting pressures. He indicated potential personnel changes but expressed continued confidence in his Cabinet.

Lacore will join Congress in January, unaffected by votes in the current session. If the impeachment extends into the next Congress, she might vote on the fate of the defense secretary who dismissed her.

The process requires a simple House majority for impeachment, while the Senate demands a two-thirds majority for conviction and removal. Lacore does not anticipate the matter reaching her tenure, suggesting it will be resolved beforehand.
