On Friday, President Donald Trump addressed a question regarding the ongoing cyclospora outbreak during a conversation with Fox News senior White House correspondent Peter Doocy. This marks the president’s initial public comment on the issue, which has affected at least 4,173 individuals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among the affected, 308 people have required hospitalization. The CDC is also reviewing thousands of other potential cases.
The outbreak has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms de Mexico. However, investigations by health officials are ongoing to determine if other contaminated products might have contributed. Cyclospora, known for causing severe gastrointestinal issues, is often associated with fresh produce. Outbreaks involving this parasite can take extensive time to resolve because symptoms don’t always manifest immediately after exposure.
The White House had previously stated that the situation was under control. Despite this assurance, Friday was the first time the president personally addressed the outbreak. When Doocy inquired about the safety of consuming lettuce again, Trump replied, “I don’t know, I haven’t thought about it. This is the first time I’ve been asked that question. Are you eating lettuce recently?” His response elicited laughter, and he noted that “nobody wants to ask that question.”
