President Trump Creates ‘AI Force’ Amid Rising Concerns

President Trump has announced the creation of an ‘AI Force’ in response to demands for regulation surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), despite dismissing wider concerns about the technology as a ‘hoax.’ On Saturday, he revealed plans for the new body, drawing comparisons to the U.S. Space Force established during his first term, but shared limited details regarding its structure or duties. Additionally, Trump intends to appoint an AI ‘czar’ to oversee the administration’s approach to managing this emerging technology. This role has previously been held by venture capitalist David Sacks, who stepped down in March.

‘We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System,’ Trump stated in a Truth Social post.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant has initiated discussions for increased international cooperation on AI with Chinese officials in New York, as reported by NBC News. Bessant indicated that an ongoing dialogue between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping would address national security issues related to AI within the U.S.-China framework.

While Trump has resisted calls for regulatory measures on the AI industry, warnings from several AI researchers have highlighted potential threats from uncontrolled AI development, even suggesting possible human extinction within the next decade. Nonetheless, Trump has stressed the importance of ensuring the U.S. does not fall behind China in the AI race. He suggested ‘guardrails’ might be established, though he criticized ‘negative forces’ for raising concerns unlikely to materialize.

Despite Trump’s recent AI initiatives, he has continued to label backlash as a rehashing of previous hoaxes alleged by Democrats, including his impeachments and climate change. Public opinion surveys reveal a broad consensus across political lines regarding AI concerns, with a July poll showing Americans are significantly more worried than excited about AI’s potential impacts. A recent Politico poll found that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe AI presents at least a ‘moderate’ risk of endangering humanity, with shared sentiment among voters for both Trump and Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections.

On Truth Social, Trump polled followers about renaming AI terms, suggesting alternatives like ‘Superior Intelligence,’ ‘Extreme Intelligence,’ and ‘Supreme Intelligence.’ Critics, such as Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), have expressed skepticism toward Trump’s AI force on platforms like CBS News’s ‘Face the Nation,’ advocating for an AI regulatory agency analogous to the Food and Drug Administration.

Former President Obama has condemned Trump’s stance, warning of the administration’s inability or unwillingness to develop an effective regulatory framework amid rapid technological advancements.

During President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States, AI will be a focal point in discussions. Rep. Khanna has emphasized reaching international agreements encompassing monitoring and data checks as vital steps. In parallel, experts have noted that AI singularity is approaching faster than anticipated, and the military has narrowly avoided incidents arising from AI-induced false intelligence reports.
