They spent six months preparing for this grand event, which involved a dedicated team of 75 people. Organizing 850,000 fireworks shells for the celebration of America250 across multiple locations on land and barges posed a complex logistical challenge.

Security Considerations for the Event

With America’s 250th birthday approaching, authorities have prepared for potential threats during Fourth of July celebrations. The Salute to America 250 Celebration and Fireworks in Washington, D.C. is expected to attract a crowd exceeding a million people to the National Mall. Attendees will hear from President Donald Trump and witness what the White House describes as “the largest pyrotechnics display in world history.”

Jason Pack, a retired FBI supervisory special agent, highlighted the extensive coordination among government agencies to ensure security, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to prevent missed threats.

Examples of Past Security Threats

Past incidents, such as the 2022 mass shooting at a July Fourth parade in Highland Park, Illinois, serve as reminders of the need for vigilance. With heightened security measures during major events in the capital, experts stress the importance of preparedness for smaller events as well.

Paul Mauro, a former NYPD Legal Bureau Commanding Officer, emphasized the necessity for local law enforcement to work with larger agencies, stating, “Don’t be afraid to contact the FBI or Homeland Security.” He advised small towns to acknowledge the possibility of terrorist attacks and to implement preventive measures.

Preparing for Potential Threats

The Waukesha Christmas parade attack in 2021 highlighted the risk of unconventional threats, such as vehicle-ramming. Darrell Edward Brooks Jr. drove an SUV into parade attendees, resulting in multiple casualties. In another incident, Sayfullo Saipov used a rented truck to attack a crowd during a Halloween parade in New York City in 2017.

Mauro pointed out that preemptive actions, such as using vehicles as barriers, can mitigate similar threats, as seen in New York City.

These centers enable the sharing of threat-related information among governmental and private sector partners.
