Rahm Emanuel, a former Chicago Mayor and White House chief of staff, has urged Democrats not to impeach President Donald Trump if they gain control of the House of Representatives. During an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Emanuel recommended pursuing ethics reform instead.
“Short answer: No, because it’s not going anywhere, and it’s going to be a food fight,” Emanuel said. He emphasized the need for Democrats to focus on delivering change through comprehensive ethics packages.
“You’re never going to get an impeachment,” Emanuel stated. “Prove Washington isn’t Disneyland on the Potomac by driving change.”
As the midterm elections approach, Democrats hold a significant advantage over Republicans. They are projected to win 215 seats compared to 201 for the GOP. The Democrats need only three more victories from the 19 toss-up races to achieve a majority.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has not committed to impeachment proceedings against Trump. Jeffries indicated this summer that making life more affordable for Americans is the priority.
Emanuel is rumored to be considering a 2028 presidential run. He has expressed moderate views and resistance to a socialist agenda but supports far-left candidates like Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.
“You think people wanna support defunding the police? Open borders? Run on it. I don’t,” Emanuel told Fox News Digital. “A healthy debate among progressive and pragmatic members is the nature of a coalition party.”
At the Texas Tribune Festival, Emanuel praised Democratic Texas Senate nominee James Talarico. However, when questioned about his support for El-Sayed, Emanuel hedged, emphasizing the importance of Michigan voters’ decisions.
“It doesn’t matter what I do… it matters what Michigan voters think,” Emanuel said.
