A 30-year-old woman suffered serious injuries from a shark attack at a Sydney beach on Saturday. Emergency crews responded quickly to Coogee Beach after reports of the attack. The woman was airlifted to a hospital for treatment, as confirmed by police.
According to a police statement, bystanders assisted by pulling her from the water and providing initial first aid. The police and emergency personnel were present at the scene shortly after the incident.
The woman was pulled from the water by members of the public who commenced first aid, police said.
The attack resulted in severe injuries to the woman’s arm and leg. Authorities decided to close Coogee Beach, along with two nearby beaches, as a precautionary measure.
This incident follows a pattern of increased shark attacks off the Australian coast. Last week, a 35-year-old fisherman was reportedly killed by a nearly 15-foot-long shark near Western Australia. The fatal attacks continue to raise alarms, with several occurring near popular tourist and recreational areas.
Earlier this year, a 12-year-old lost his life in a shark attack in Sydney Harbour. The east coast of Australia experienced temporary beach closures in January due to a series of shark attacks, attributed to murky water conditions after heavy rain.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare indicates that the country averages around 20 shark attacks annually. Recent events, however, seem to surpass these figures, contributing to heightened public concern.
The series of attacks have affected local communities and have prompted officials to enhance safety measures along the coast. Authorities continue to monitor and manage shark-related risks in a bid to ensure public safety while addressing the environmental factors that may contribute to these incidents.
