Record Number of Native American Candidates in Elections

1 day ago 0

In an unprecedented development, at least 355 Native American and Indigenous candidates have participated or are participating in local, state, and federal primary and general elections this year. This marks a significant milestone in political representation for these communities.

Former interior secretary Deb Haaland is making headlines with her campaign for governor in New Mexico. Having been observed on September 13, she stands a chance to make history. No Native American woman has ever served as a governor or held a seat in the U.S. Senate. If Deb Haaland secures the governor’s position in New Mexico, it would be a groundbreaking achievement.

Similarly, former congresswoman Mary Peltola from Alaska and Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan are also striving for spots in the U.S. Senate. Their victories would signify a substantial shift in political representation, fostering diversity at high levels of government.
