The Beginning

In 1976, Arthur Gelb, a notable Times editor and critic, introduced the column. He encouraged New Yorkers to share their unexpected encounters and poetic observations about the city. Typically brief, these submissions often came with playful illustrations.

Over time, Metropolitan Diary featured a mixture of one-act plays, poems, complaints, confessions, light verse, and overheard gossip. Notable contributions include a short story by Delia Ephron, poetry from Eve Merriam, and Julia Child’s reminiscences. Still, most entries were from anonymous locals, capturing tender moments amid the city’s hustle.

Snapshots Through Time

A memorable scene involves a woman scolding her guide dog for trying to exit the subway at the wrong stop in 1996. Another notable moment from 2004 describes Yoko Ono recognizing a man she met at a soba restaurant during another encounter at an antiques show.

The Diary acts as a time capsule. Early entries mention phone books and subway tokens, with characters like Gertrude, Morris, and Thelma. By the 1990s, it’s MetroCards, squeegees, and coffee shops. Entries lament the closures of cherished bars and restaurants, and capture celebrity sightings, such as Patti Smith and Lou Reed.
