Representative Don Bacon, a prominent Republican supporter of Ukraine in Congress, has publicly criticized President Donald Trump. He responded to Trump’s remarks following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, where Trump expressed a desire for Zelensky to simply “end the war.” Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska and a retired Air Force brigadier general, accused the White House of creating “moral ambiguity” about the conflict. He emphasized that Russia alone is responsible for beginning the war.
“Moral ambiguity continues to grip the WH,” Bacon wrote on X Thursday. “It’s Putin who started this war and is doing the invading. Blame Putin. This is embarrassing.”
The incident occurred after Trump’s meeting with Zelensky in Washington. When asked by reporters about the meeting, Trump described it positively but highlighted his desire for the war to end. He noted the ongoing high death toll, mentioning that “25,000 people died last month,” and called for an end to the conflict.
A White House official stressed Trump’s humanitarian concern for the conflict, asserting the administration’s commitment to ending the war by engaging both Moscow and Kyiv.
Bacon, however, expressed concerns that Trump’s statements might obscure the clear responsibility for the conflict’s initiation when Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Bacon’s Consistent Stance on Russia and Ukraine
Bacon’s recent remarks are part of a broader pattern. He has consistently criticized Trump’s rhetoric on Russia and Ukraine. Earlier this year, Bacon warned of a perceived appeasement policy towards President Putin and stressed that peace must not reward aggression. Bacon has defended NATO and other traditional alliances while warning against actions that could weaken these relationships.
The congressman has also voiced concerns regarding the disruption within the national security establishment during Trump’s presidency. He argues for the importance of strong alliances, experienced military leadership, and a clear stance against Russian aggression.
Current Conflict Dynamics in Ukraine
Bacon’s comments come at a crucial juncture in the Ukraine war, now in its fifth year. Russia and Ukraine continue exchanging drone and missile attacks amid stalled diplomatic efforts. Zelensky’s recent visit to Washington discussed military cooperation and peace negotiations with U.S. officials, focusing on missile production and air defense.
Ukraine is expanding its long-range strikes, recently targeting Russian and Iranian military logistics in the Caspian Sea, signaling global conflict dimensions. Despite heavy sanctions, Russia remains firm on keeping annexed territories, while tensions with Iran escalate further.
Improved Relations Between Trump and Zelensky
Relations between Trump and Zelensky have improved recently. After initial friction over U.S. support, latest meetings were more cordial. Both leaders described the recent White House discussions as productive. Zelensky acknowledged improved relations, a sentiment echoed by Trump with softened rhetoric.
Laura Loomer’s Shift in Perspective on Ukraine
Conservative activist Laura Loomer, a staunch Trump supporter who previously criticized U.S. support for Ukraine, recently reversed her stance after visiting the war-affected areas in Ukraine. Observing the devastation, she acknowledged underestimating Ukraine’s suffering, influenced by Russian narratives. Her shift symbolizes a possible broadening of support for Ukraine among Trump-aligned voices.
Nonetheless, divisions exist over military aid and sanctions. Bacon maintains that clarity is crucial: Russia initiated the conflict, not Ukraine. While Trump’s comments aimed at seeking peace, Bacon highlights the importance of precise wording and responsibility in such discussions.
