Republican Bruce Blakeman Gains Momentum Against Governor Kathy Hochul in New Poll

1 hour ago 0

A recent poll by Siena University indicates that Republican Bruce Blakeman is narrowing the gap against Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the New York governor race. Traditionally seen as a Democratic stronghold, New York has experienced tightened margins in recent elections. While Kamala Harris won the state by less than 13 points, Joe Biden had a 23-point victory in 2020. Hochul narrowly defeated Lee Zeldin by about 6 points in 2022.

Hochul’s previous narrow victory and other trends have provided hope for Republicans aiming to compete this year. The party plans to associate Hochul and moderate Democrats with progressive lawmakers from New York City primaries, many of whom identify as democratic socialists. However, Democrats emphasize Hochul’s increasing popularity, the declining national approval of Donald Trump, the unpopular Iran war, and inflation concerns as favorable factors for them.

Hochul’s Lead Shrinks in New York Governor Poll

In the latest survey of 811 likely voters conducted from August 3-6, 2026, Hochul possessed a 10-point advantage over Blakeman. Her support stood at 49%, while Blakeman held 39%. This represents a tighter race compared to June, where Hochul had a 20-point lead. Previous polls showed even larger leads for Hochul earlier this year.

The new poll reports a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points. Other Democrats fared better in the surveys. Letitia James, Democratic attorney general candidate, led her Republican opponent by 18 points. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli had a 23-point edge over his challenger.

Boris Heersink, political science professor at Fordham University, found Hochul’s polling performance less competitive than expected but still comfortable. Joseph Viteritti, a public policy professor at Hunter College, acknowledged Blakeman’s growing recognition.

Blakeman Challenges Poll Results

Blakeman expressed skepticism about the poll’s accuracy, claiming it consistently misrepresents the race. He argued both candidates are virtually tied, noting issues such as high taxes and crime under Hochul’s administration.

Insights from Other Polls and Forecasts

A co/efficient poll showed Hochul with a 6-point lead, while an Echelon Insights poll reported a 15-point advantage for her. Both polls had varying margins of error. Analysts like the Cook Political Report deem the race safely Democratic. Prediction markets on Kalshi and Polymarket gave Hochul a 94% chance of victory.

Some predicted Hochul’s vulnerability in a Democratic primary, but her opponent, Antonio Delgado, withdrew. Her collaboration with progressive New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani might strengthen her position within the party. Viteritti highlights their partnership in addressing upcoming budget challenges.

Progressive Wins in NYC and Republican Hopes

New York Democratic primaries highlighted progressive successes. Noteworthy victories included Darializa Avila-Chevalier and Brad Lander. Republicans hope these shifts will alienate moderate voters, providing an opening. Yet, experts doubt the statewide impact of these shifts, emphasizing midterm dynamics centered around reactions to the Trump administration.

Is New York Shifting Towards a Purple State?

While New York has experienced reduced Democratic margins and Republicans made gains in the city’s outer boroughs, the state remains heavily Democrat in voter registration. Over 6.4 million Democrats compared to 2.9 million Republicans were registered as of February 20, according to the New York State Board of Elections. The upcoming elections could reveal enduring trends in party support.
