Republicans Aim to Maintain Momentum with Black Voters

In Dallas, T.W. Shannon, former chair of Black Voices for Trump, expressed optimism about the Republican Party sustaining its gains with Black voters. Shannon highlighted how the GOP, under former President Donald Trump, has appealed to Black voters by focusing on job creation and reducing crime rates. Trump secured 16% of the Black vote in the 2024 election, a significant increase from previous years.

Shannon described Trump’s impact by saying, “It’s because Donald Trump has transformed the Republican Party back into the working party. You see Democrats competing for the Black vote now.” He noted that issues like job creation resonate well within Black communities, contrasting them with policies promoted by Democratic Socialists of America, such as raising taxes and disbanding the police.

Democrats counter Shannon’s perspective. A Democratic National Committee (DNC) spokesperson argued, “Black Americans are going to reject Trump’s billionaires-first, cost-raising agenda at the ballot box.” The DNC is committing resources to engage and mobilize Black voters, emphasizing protection of civil and voting rights.

Shannon, who served as Oklahoma state House Speaker and is now a candidate for lieutenant governor, remains confident of winning in Oklahoma. Speaking at the GOP midterm convention, Shannon embraced the opportunity to promote both his state and country.

As the GOP seeks to retain and build upon its support among Black voters for future elections, strategies will likely focus on policy outcomes that directly benefit these communities.
