In Colombia, a tragic 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit on August 10, 2026, resulting in significant destruction and loss of life. Footage surfaced showing a baby being rescued from the debris of a collapsed building, highlighting the intense rescue efforts taking place.
The video, shared by Brian Osorio Zuluaga, captures the critical moment when people scoured the wreckage. They called out to a survivor beneath the ruins. The man, with a muffled voice, responded that he was accompanied by a baby.
Amidst frantic efforts, the cries of the child could be heard. Another clip showed a man clutching the infant, his arms bloodied, with the lower part of his body still trapped. A determined team of five men carefully extracted the baby and immediately called for medical assistance. Relief and joy erupted as the child was successfully rescued.
In a series of posts, Zuluaga captured the ongoing rescue efforts. He described joining the initial wave of rescuers, emphasizing the profound impact of their actions. “A helping hand can make the difference between life and death,” he wrote, underscoring the vital importance of unity in such crises.
Although both the baby and the man’s conditions remained unclear, search teams were tirelessly pursuing any remaining survivors among the debris. The Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella reported that the earthquake led to 181 confirmed casualties, with 2,595 injured and nearly 4,000 individuals unaccounted for according to civilian-run databases.
In response, the international community offered aid. The U.S. pledged over $15 million, while Mexico’s President committed supplies, personnel, and essential equipment. Additionally, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele announced the dispatch of two planes carrying 100 tons of aid.
Bukele expressed solidarity, stating, “Our prayers are with the families of the victims, the wounded, and all the Colombian people.”
