The U.S. State Department is closely monitoring reports of a possible fatal pneumonic plague case in Russia. They urge Moscow to provide accurate information swiftly, as details are currently unconfirmed.
A State Department official informed that there have been reports of a death in Irkutsk Oblast, located in southeastern Siberia. The situation is being watched closely alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal bodies. The official highlighted the lack of confirmed details and urged Russian authorities to disclose known information.
Former CIA officer Dan Hoffman indicated the U.S. intelligence community’s likely involvement in collecting comprehensive intelligence on the matter. He also noted that the U.S. embassy in Moscow is expected to communicate with their Russian counterparts due to potential risks for those in Russia. He stated that Washington would maintain communication with allies and partners in the region to share pertinent information.
Pneumonic plague, caused by Yersinia pestis bacteria and primarily carried by rats, is still found in various parts of the world. According to experts, this type of plague can be treated effectively with common antibiotics, especially if treatment begins early. Treatment options may include intravenous or oral antimicrobials depending on severity and other factors.
The State Department official emphasized that protecting U.S. citizens is a top priority. They encouraged Americans traveling abroad to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates.
