Rick Moranis Returns in ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel

Rick Moranis, widely recognized for his role as Dark Helmet in the beloved cult film ‘Spaceballs,’ has excited fans by announcing a sequel to the 1987 classic. During Comic-Con International, the actor joined a panel and revealed details about ‘Spaceballs: The New One,’ set to release next April.

When asked about his decision to return, Moranis expressed enthusiasm, noting the project felt like the perfect opportunity. He compared it to being part of a family. Moranis hid within the crowd wearing his iconic oversized helmet while film soldiers performed a playful search, adding humor to the panel introduction.

On stage, Moranis was accompanied by fellow actors Daphne Zuniga, director Josh Greenbaum, writer and actor Josh Gad, writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, along with new cast members Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman. Although character details for Palmer and Pullman remain under wraps, their excitement was evident.

Keke Palmer shared her amazement at reading the script, repeatedly finding herself surprised by its humor. Lewis Pullman, initially hesitant, found the script exceptionally funny, citing it as one of the funniest he had encountered. Despite his doubts, Pullman expressed that joining the project was an easy choice.

Although Mel Brooks and Bill Pullman were absent from Comic-Con, they engaged fans through recorded messages. Behind-the-scenes footage of Brooks recording lines and reuniting with Pullman and Zuniga was shared, alongside a teaser trailer providing glimpses of the upcoming film.

Josh Gad announced his role as a mawg in the sequel, ensuring fans the new film would honor deceased original cast members, including John Candy, Joan Rivers, Dom DeLuise, and Dick Van Patten. Humorously, the team mocked popular cinematic universes with a parody timeline displaying imagined sequels of ‘The Almighty Schwartz Saga’ across giant screens.
