He was about 15 yards from the hole, attempting a chip uphill to the green, yet he failed to apply sufficient power, causing the ball to roll back to his feet.
McIlroy quickly composed himself, took a practice swing, and attempted the shot again, but with similar lack of force. The ball once more rolled straight back to him. On the third try, he managed to reach the green and double-bogeyed the hole, impacting his chance at the tournament’s $10 million purse.
Observing this, an ESPN+ broadcaster highlighted the importance of strong execution especially after an initial mistake, using the phrase, “to err long” in such circumstances.
Andy North, an ESPN analyst, described McIlroy as prone to making forced errors, contrasting him with Scottie Scheffler, known for consistent play. North praised McIlroy’s skill, acknowledging frustration at his occasional lapses, noting how strategic mistakes can differ between top players.
Despite the setback, McIlroy finished the day 1-under and 3-under for the tournament. He held 22nd place among 30 competitors. At the time, Ryan Gerard led the scoreboard at 9-under par.
