Many runners think that adding weight and resistance to their workout could increase strain on their bodies. However, new research suggests the opposite might be true in some cases. A study published in PLOS One indicates that parents running with a stroller are less likely to experience overuse injuries compared to those who run without one.
The study found that parents who ran with a stroller had a 58 percent lower chance of suffering an overuse injury. They also had a 55 percent lower injury rate per 1,000 miles run. Researchers examined survey responses from 255 runners who had children aged 0 to 3 years, comparing stroller runners with those who did not incorporate a stroller into their routine.
Overuse injuries were reported by 19 percent of stroller runners, while 30 percent of non-stroller runners experienced such injuries. Allison Altman-Singles, associate professor of kinesiology and mechanical engineering at Penn State Berks and senior author of the study, explained that biomechanics play a role.
We believe this is due to the biomechanics associated with stroller running: more flexed posture, more forward lean and less vertical force,
Altman-Singles said.
The stroller runner can better distribute their vertical force through the handlebars and feet, which helps reduce the forces that cause overuse injuries,
she told Newsweek.
The study supports previous research suggesting that stroller running reduces impact loading, a factor linked to common running injuries. Researchers noted that pushing down on stroller handlebars may redirect some force from the legs to the stroller, potentially reducing joint and tissue stress.
Stroller runners also logged higher mileage during certain stages of parenthood. Parents with children aged 6 to 12 months ran 34 percent more miles than those who did not use a stroller. This suggests that stroller running may help parents stay active at times when it’s challenging to find time for exercise.
Among injuries that did occur, plantar fasciitis was the most common condition reported in both groups. The foot was the most frequently injured body part overall. The authors cautioned that the study relies on self-reported survey data and does not prove that stroller running directly prevents injuries. However, the findings provide reassurance for parents seeking to maintain fitness after having children.
Running with a stroller is a safe, practical way for parents to exercise in a challenging phase of life and allows runners to maintain mileage throughout the baby and toddler stages of parenting,
Altman-Singles said.
For those considering stroller running, she recommends selecting a lightweight jogging stroller with an adjustable handlebar height for comfortable elbow bends.
We prefer three-wheeled models with a front wheel that can be directionally locked with hand brakes for added safety on hills,
Altman-Singles advised.
