Tragic Deaths Following Encounters with Immigration Agents Raise Concerns

In Florida, authorities reported a fatal incident involving immigration agents. A man running from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agents was struck and killed by a tractor trailer.

This marks the third death within a week related to ICE encounters, with preceding shooting incidents occurring in Texas and Maine. The man, 28, was one of four individuals in a vehicle that halted at a gas station parking lot near St. Augustine early Tuesday morning. During a confrontation with ICE and Homeland Security Investigations agents, the group fled on foot. In an attempt to cross a busy road, the man was hit by a semi-truck. Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan confirmed that the truck’s driver stopped to assist.

Since President Trump’s mass deportation campaign launch last year, there have been at least ten deaths linked to encounters with immigration agents.

The specific reasons behind the encounter on Tuesday remain undisclosed. Homeland Security acknowledged the operation and mentioned ongoing investigations into the death of the Mexican national by the Florida Highway Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations. However, they did not provide updates on the other three individuals from the vehicle.

“It’s a tragedy stemming from an overreaching agency,” stated State Rep. Angie Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat. She referenced previous incidents involving ICE agents in Houston and Maine, as well as operations in Northeast Florida, resulting in fear, chaos, and death.

In previous cases, fatalities have occurred as individuals fled from agents and were struck by vehicles. Last summer, outside a Home Depot in California, a man died after being hit by an SUV while escaping immigration officers on a freeway. While Homeland Security stated that Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez, a 52-year-old Guatemalan citizen, was not pursued by immigration authorities at the time, the tragedy remains similar.

In another October incident, Josué Castro Rivera, a 24-year-old gardener from Honduras, was fatally struck by a pickup truck in Virginia during a traffic stop. Homeland Security stated the stop was part of a “targeted, intelligence-based” operation. When Castro Rivera resisted and fled, the tragic outcome unfolded.

On Tuesday, the Mexican government urged U.S. state attorneys general to review migrant deaths occurring during ICE raids or custody for potential criminal prosecution.
