After parting ways with Deebo Samuel in the 2025 offseason and expressing that Brandon Aiyuk would not return, the San Francisco 49ers sought to bolster their wide receiver lineup to support quarterback Brock Purdy. The team made significant moves by drafting De’Zhaun Stribling in the second round and signing Christian Kirk during free agency. However, the most talked-about move was the acquisition of the two-time All-Pro Mike Evans, who had spent his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since being drafted seventh overall in 2014.
In a conversation with Laura Britt from NBC Sports, Purdy expressed enthusiasm about playing alongside Evans. He acknowledged the high expectations Evans brings, given his Super Bowl experience with Tom Brady, noting that this adds pressure to Purdy’s role. “Being around his presence and understanding what it takes to play with him is exciting,” Purdy shared in an NFL Media transcription. He welcomed the pressure as a positive force, stating, “I have a guy demanding success and I love that. I want to play with guys like that.”
Purdy explained that he has previously played with high-caliber teammates such as George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey. He highlighted Evans’ insights from playing with Brady and Baker Mayfield, enhancing their team’s strategies with his knowledge and experience. The focus now is on building strong chemistry with Evans, which Purdy believes will improve their collaboration.
At age 32, Evans signed a three-year contract with the 49ers valued at up to $42.4 million. Despite playing only eight games last season due to injuries, he managed 30 receptions for 368 yards and three touchdowns. Injuries included a hamstring strain, a concussion, and a broken clavicle.
Evans is expected to be a pivotal part of the 49ers’ lineup, influencing the team’s prospects this season. The 49ers had a mixed postseason, winning against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild-Card Round but losing to the Seattle Seahawks 41-6 in the Divisional Round. The lack of receiver depth was evident in the loss, as Jauan Jennings led with just two catches for 23 yards.
