Schumer Focuses on Trump Address, Amidst Gallego Scandal

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., chose not to comment on a new scandal involving a member of his party, instead concentrating on his planned critique of President Donald Trump’s prime-time address on Thursday. This development follows a report by the New York Post concerning Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., and his alleged relationships with at least two Democratic House staffers during his time in the House.

According to the Post, these relationships reportedly took place when Gallego was not married. While such relationships are not prohibited by House rules if the staffers do not work in the lawmaker’s office, the matter has drawn attention due to Gallego’s standing as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election. When asked by reporters about these allegations, Gallego dismissed them as gossip.

The allegations have raised scrutiny, especially as Gallego’s name has circulated in political discussions around a future presidential bid. In response to questions about the allegations, Gallego dismissed the issue as gossip and did not provide further comment.

The developments come close on the heels of previous attention on Gallego’s association with former Rep. Eric Swalwell, who left the House earlier due to accusations of sexual misconduct. Despite Swalwell’s strong denials, Gallego was quick to distance himself from him, stating that their close friendship had ‘clouded his judgment’ about the rumors that had long been present in Washington, D.C.

To handle the ensuing media attention, Gallego reportedly enlisted the help of a former deputy press secretary from Joe Biden’s administration. This was part of a broader strategy to address the fallout from both Swalwell’s situation and a Senate Ethics probe, which was recently thrown out as it was deemed politically motivated.

The Senate Ethics Committee’s dismissal of the complaint, initially raised by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., was met with Gallego’s statement asserting that the accusations were baseless conspiracies propagated by right-wing factions. Despite this, Luna has continued to publicly call for Gallego’s resignation, underscoring the ongoing political tension.
