Seattle’s Rise as a Soccer Hub

4 days ago 0

Seattle has emerged as a prominent city in American soccer, supported by thriving professional teams and dedicated fans. Lumen Field, temporarily renamed Seattle Stadium, plays a pivotal role as the home of both the Seattle Sounders FC and the Seattle Reign FC.

In 1994, Seattle soccer enthusiasts faced disappointment when FIFA excluded the city from World Cup hosting. The debate centered around the Kingdome and the University of Washington’s Husky Stadium’s suitability. This exclusion left local fans feeling slighted.

Now, Seattle’s selection is unquestionable. Lumen Field, even as the Seahawks’ NFL home, suits soccer with precision. The Seattle Sounders FC have become a marquee Major League Soccer team, attracting over 30,000 fans regularly. The Seattle Reign FC, in the National Women’s Soccer League, made Seattle a leading city for women’s soccer.

Top American soccer stars found homes in Seattle. Clint Dempsey concluded his career as a Sounder. Megan Rapinoe played her full NWSL career with the Reign.

Lenny Peters, a soccer fan wearing Seattle Mariners gear, recalled his time in high school when the city missed out on World Cup games. ‘It’s here now,’ he noted with satisfaction.

Seattle’s recent sports achievements highlight its growth. The Seahawks claimed a Super Bowl victory. The Mariners nearly reached their first World Series last year. Seattle’s new National Hockey League team, the Seattle Kraken, has gained popularity. There’s potential for the NBA to reinstate the Seattle SuperSonics, a team that relocated in 2008, causing local dismay.
