Balogun’s Red Card and Suspension: Impact on U.S. World Cup Campaign

1 month ago 0

U.S. forward Folarin Balogun received a red card after stepping on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic’s foot during a World Cup match at Levi’s Stadium. This incident occurred on Wednesday, impacting the U.S. team’s World Cup journey.

Officials confirmed that the U.S. cannot appeal the red card and Balogun’s suspension for the upcoming round of 16 match against Belgium. FIFA rules for the 2026 World Cup, reported by The Athletic, state that a red card automatically leads to suspension from the next match. Additional penalties can be applied by FIFA’s judicial bodies as deemed necessary.

The possibility for an appeal exists only if FIFA’s disciplinary committee extends the suspension beyond one game after reviewing the incident. The decision to card Balogun raised immediate questions from both commentators and fans.

During the physical match, Balogun collided with Muharemović, stepping on his foot. Muharemović fell to the ground in visible pain and received on-field treatment. Following a video assistant referee review, the referee deemed the action deserving of a red card.

U.S. fans, familiar with appeal processes from other sports like the NBA and NFL, suggested including video evidence of Lionel Messi avoiding discipline for a similar incident earlier in the tournament. Despite these sentiments, the red card decision remains unless further matches are added to Balogun’s suspension.

Iliana Limón Romero, Assistant Managing Editor for Sports at the Los Angeles Times, and Kevin Baxter, a seasoned soccer and hockey writer, provided coverage of the event. Baxter’s extensive experience, covering numerous international sporting events, adds depth to the reporting.
