Democratic Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona is urging an investigation into the situation aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. His concerns stem from a report by a sailor’s grandmother. She stated that her grandson, who was already thin upon joining the Navy, has lost a significant amount of weight during the vessel’s lengthy deployment. The reported weight loss is between 20 and 25 pounds.
Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot and a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, shared these details during a conversation on Morning Edition. He expressed concern over the sailor’s struggles, describing the situation as both depressing and challenging.
Senator Kelly also criticized the responses from former President Donald Trump and former Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He perceived their replies to the concerns about the Lincoln’s conditions as dismissive.
In response to these issues, Kelly, along with other lawmakers, seeks an investigation into the matter. They are advocating for a bipartisan congressional delegation to visit the USS Abraham Lincoln and directly evaluate the conditions aboard.
