Sen. Rand Paul’s Ongoing Criticism of Dr. Anthony Fauci

Sen. Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky, continues to suggest that Dr. Anthony Fauci should serve prison time. Paul’s comments came during an appearance on MS NOW, where he discussed Fauci’s recent decision to invoke the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during a Senate hearing. The hearing was chaired by Paul, who is known for his longstanding criticism of the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Paul has consistently claimed that Fauci lied to Congress. He believes lying to Congress constitutes a serious crime deserving felony charges and possible jail time. This stance aligns with his interest in uncovering the truth about the gain-of-function research linked to Fauci before the COVID-19 pandemic. Paul noted that while he didn’t know what to expect from Fauci’s testimony, he remains concerned about the potential pardon from former President Joe Biden, which could shield Fauci from legal consequences.

“Did he lie to Congress? I think he did,” Paul stated baldly. “People who lie to Congress should be charged with a felony and, if convicted, go to jail.”

When asked if others should face criminal proceedings, Paul withheld specific accusations. He suggested that all parties involved should apologize and acknowledged their accountability in other contexts.

Geist inquired whether Fauci had any malicious intent throughout his actions. Paul replied that while he wouldn’t describe Fauci’s conduct as “nefarious,” he criticized Fauci for a perceived elitist attitude, particularly regarding his comments on mask recommendations during the pandemic.

Paul has made these allegations against Fauci before, notably telling Hannity in 2021 that lying about gain-of-function research could lead to a five-year jail term. He expressed doubt that the Department of Justice under Biden would pursue this matter, stressing the importance of honesty among public officials.

“We know from his own words, not because I say lies, but his private email say he was lying,” Paul told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham. “Virtually everything he said in private contradicted what he was saying in public.”
