U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat from Georgia, has been serving as the junior senator for the state following his long tenure as the senior pastor at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, a position once held by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In his capacity as a senator, Warnock delivered a noted sermon at the Washington National Cathedral in 2023, coinciding with the Juneteenth celebrations. He used the life of the prophet Isaiah as a focal point, quoting, “Every valley shall be exalted, every mountain and hill shall be made low, the crooked places shall be made straight, the rough places smooth, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.”
Warnock elaborates on these themes in his recent book, The Crooked Places Made Straight: Reflections on the Moral Meaning of America. He suggests that democracy is more than a political structure; it embodies a spiritual conception.
During an interview with Michel Martin on Morning Edition, Warnock emphasized that America’s issues stem primarily from moral conflicts rather than political ones. He remarked, “What we’re dealing with right now is not the difference between right and left, it’s really the difference between right and wrong.” Warnock expressed regret that his party has, in his view, allowed those on the political right to dominate the discussion around faith and values.
Warnock also emphasized the critical role of faith in addressing systemic injustice, beyond merely personal conduct. He urged for a broader moral imagination within American politics, advocating for a faith grounded in social justice.
