Senator Bernie Sanders Avoids Endorsement of Francesca Hong

Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont recently sparked conversation on social media by not endorsing Francesca Hong, a Democratic Socialist of America member, in her bid for Wisconsin governor. In a discussion with Jon Favreau on the Pod Save America podcast, Sanders stated, “I don’t think so,” when asked about supporting Hong. He elaborated that although he met Hong in Wisconsin a few years ago and found her to be “very, very nice,” he doesn’t feel familiar enough with the race to get involved.

Sanders mentioned that his involvement in gubernatorial races has been limited. One exception was in Maine, where he endorsed Democrat Troy Jackson, who succeeded Graham Platner as a candidate following a controversy. Platner, previously endorsed by Sanders, faced widespread criticism online.

The media quickly picked up on Sanders’ decision. Some commentators interpreted it as a sign that Sanders doubts Hong’s electoral viability. Despite endorsing candidates in various other races, Sanders’ lack of support for Hong drew questions and criticism. Notably, Chuck Ross from the Washington Free Beacon highlighted Sanders’ past endorsements despite his current focus on the Senate.

“Bernie says he’s not backing Francesca Hong because he’s focused on the Senate,” Ross noted. “Yet he’s endorsed in other races.”

Critics argue that Hong’s politics are particularly challenging in a swing state like Wisconsin. Her proposals include abolishing the U.S. Senate and defunding the police, which raises concerns about her general election prospects. Recent interviews show Hong attempting to moderate her positions ahead of a gubernatorial primary against several notable opponents.

Political figures continue to weigh in. Brandon Maly of Turning Point Action described Hong as “too radical… even for Bernie Sanders.” Hong’s potential general election opponent, Republican Tom Tiffany, hinted at Sanders’ selective endorsements, referencing Hong’s controversial remark about Thanksgiving that gained attention online.

In the upcoming primary, Hong faces competition from Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, former Wisconsin Department of Administration secretary Joel Brennan, and Democratic state Sen. Kelda Roys. Polls indicate that she is likely to win and face Tiffany in the November election.
