Senator Calls for Re-examination of Teachers Union Charter

The head of a key Senate committee is challenging Congress to re-evaluate the charter of the National Education Association (NEA). This appeal stems from concerns about the group’s alleged far-left connections and financial practices.

The NEA, representing about three million educators, faces criticism for its involvement in liberal activism, accusations of ignoring antisemitism, and significant financial support for left-wing causes. Its collaborations with organizations that allegedly endorse political violence have also prompted scrutiny.

Senator Cassidy’s Concerns

Senator Bill Cassidy, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, has called for a review of the NEA’s congressional charter. He argues that the union’s actions distract from educational priorities. Cassidy stated that students struggle in basic subjects while subjected to ideology in classrooms.

Cassidy’s report emphasizes the NEA’s collaboration with the Zinn Education Project and Rethinking Schools. Both have produced materials endorsing the Black Panther Party’s past actions. The report criticizes the group’s alignment with Marxist and communist ideologies, inconsistent with U.S. Constitutional values.

Curriculum Controversies

Concerns include lesson plans encouraging students to role-play as activist groups opposed to conservative religious views. Another lesson aims to introduce LGBTQ+ topics in early education. The NEA’s cooperation with these educational nonprofits spans conferences, curriculum development, and shared educational events.

Financial and Political Activities

“The question is not whether each expenditure is improper, but if members understand how their fees are used and if the leadership avoids conflicts of interest,” according to the Senate committee’s report.

Since 2015, NEA financial reports indicate contributions of hundreds of millions to politically aligned organizations. This includes support for Democratic causes and employment opportunities for union leaders in funded groups.

Urlacking Jewish Representation

The report highlights Jewish educators’ claims of experiencing antisemitism within the NEA. In particular, a letter from the NEA’s Jewish Affairs Caucus notes issues of exclusion and inappropriate remarks.

American Federation of Teachers Under Scrutiny

Though not federally chartered like the NEA, the American Federation of Teachers also faces criticism for similar ideological engagements. These include protests against former President Trump and advocacy on LGBTQ+ issues.
