Senator Demands Investigation into Planned Parenthood’s Use of Federal Funds

2 weeks ago 0

Taxpayer funding to Planned Parenthood, amounting to about $1.5 billion in Medicare and Medicaid, is under scrutiny. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is pressing for an investigation into these funds, which he claims are used by the organization to support transgender procedures for minors.

Hawley addressed a letter to Mehmet Oz, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, urging an inquiry into Planned Parenthood. He believes the funds aid in promoting gender-affirming care for minors, including medication and surgical referrals.

Last year, Republicans successfully halted federal tax money from reaching abortion providers through a bill supported by President Donald Trump. However, this ban is nearing expiration on July 4, 2025. Efforts to extend this restriction in the recent budget reconciliation failed to pass.

Hawley stated that from 2019 to 2022, significant sums were tracked by the Government Accountability Office. Despite these funds not being directly linked to transgender procedures, Hawley argues that they have been indirectly utilized for such purposes. The senator accused Planned Parenthood of exploiting loopholes, providing gender-transition drugs to minors without parental consent.

Reports suggest a 40% increase in Planned Parenthood’s provision of gender-affirming care. Hawley insists this redirection of federal funds from needy populations to support such services for minors is unjustifiable.

The debate continues around the allocation of Medicaid funds to organizations like Planned Parenthood and its impact on healthcare services provided to minors.
