Senators Communicate with Mitch McConnell Amid Hospitalization

Key Senate Republicans have reached out to Sen. Mitch McConnell during his extended hospital stay for undisclosed health concerns. Aides have kept his condition private, raising questions about his ability to participate when the Senate reconvenes.

Sen. John Thune, the Senate Majority Leader, spoke with McConnell by phone. Their discussion touched on various subjects, including national security. Thune is updated on member health issues due to his role in managing votes within the Senate’s 53-47 divide.

Another Republican leader, Sen. John Barrasso, engaged in a 20-minute call with McConnell. Their conversation covered Senate races, the Supreme Court, and other matters. Barrasso’s spokeswoman mentioned McConnell’s enthusiasm to return to Senate work.

Republican strategist Scott Jennings shared that he chatted with the senator about politics and foreign policy during a 20-minute call. McConnell remains in the hospital, focusing on recovery.

The Senator continues to improve, working with staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is in recess.

McConnell, 84, announced his retirement at the end of his term in January. His current hospitalization follows a series of health issues, including a concussion in March 2023 and a fall last year. He has a history of health challenges, having had polio as a child and experiencing several falls as an adult.

First elected in 1984, McConnell served as the Republican leader from 2007 to last year. Despite his health, he has remained active, often using a wheelchair to navigate the Senate when in session.
