Severe Flash Flooding Leads to Water Restrictions and Missing Hikers in Grand Canyon

Severe flash flooding disrupted the central water supply in the Grand Canyon, prompting the National Park Service (NPS) to enforce stringent water restrictions. Efforts are ongoing to locate missing hikers.

The NPS announced stage four water restrictions starting at 12:00 p.m. on Monday. The flooding on Saturday inflicted significant damage to infrastructure, including the Transcanyon Waterline crucial for water supply to the park. Currently, park officials report one fatality and an estimate of 15 missing individuals due to the flooding.

Authorities recovered the body of a 46-year-old man from the Colorado River on Sunday night, but his identity remains withheld. On the same day, an elderly hiker was successfully rescued after becoming separated from a companion.

The NPS seeks public assistance in identifying the 15 missing people. They request information on individuals who were hiking or camping in the Bright Angel Creek area on August 29.

The flooding destroyed vital infrastructure, including the footbridges along Bright Angel Creek. As of now, over 62 people have been evacuated from affected regions since Saturday.

The imposed stage four restrictions mandate dry camping, closure of overnight accommodations, and a prohibition on fires within the South Rim and inner canyon zones.

Arizona’s Governor, Katie Hobbs, stated that state emergency officials are collaborating with federal and local authorities to continue search and rescue operations. She expressed empathy for families affected by the disaster.

The flash flooding was termed “devastating” by Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, who acknowledged the extensive physical damage and praised first responders for their dedication in evacuation and search efforts.
