Oakland Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers, who was having a standout year both defensively and offensively, suffered a torn meniscus as reported by ESPN.
The 28-year-old incurred the injury while running the bases, leaving him and the team to decide if surgery is necessary to address the issue. If Langeliers opts for surgery, ESPN indicates this will conclude his playing season in 2026.

Regardless of the decision, teams that were interested in trading for Langeliers are likely reconsidering their options. Langeliers, known to be among the elite at his position in MLB, was a key asset the A’s planned to retain despite their disappointing 44-60 record this year.
Earlier this month, Langeliers was a standout player for the team, earning his first All-Star appearance. He maintained strong performance figures with a batting line of .263/.332/.497 and a .829 OPS, alongside 23 home runs and 51 RBIs. This continues from a successful 2025 season where he hit 31 home runs with a career-high .861 OPS. However, the current injury impacts these potential achievements.
Postseason hopefuls like the New York Yankees, thought to be searching for catching talent before the deadline, may have considered Langeliers a target. With his absence, the focus may shift to other catchers in the league like Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies or Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles.
With Langeliers sidelined, the Athletics have Jonah Heim stepping up. Although he has also been included in trade talks, his role will be pivotal moving forward.
