Simeon’s James Bell Shines on the Football Field

5 days ago 0

Senior running back James Bell thrives when carrying the football for Simeon. His focus is on making an impact for the Wolverines without worrying about mistakes or injuries. “I was born to do this,” Bell said. “I’ve done it since childhood. My running style shows who I am — aggressive, powerful, and strong.”

Known as “Baby James,” Bell excelled with 215 yards and five touchdowns on 11 carries during a 60-0 Public League Red Star win over Phillips at Eckersall Stadium in Chicago. Sophomore player Jalonny Billingsley also contributed with a 42-yard touchdown on a punt return and a 36-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Aki King, helping Simeon (1-3, 1-0) return to winning form.

Each of Bell’s touchdowns surpassed 30 yards, and he sat out the second half. Corey Randolph, a senior lineman headed to Boston College, noted Bell’s influence beyond his running. “His voice carries weight,” Randolph said. “He’s a dominant player. He has excellent field vision and sees everything. He is performing at an exceptional level right now.”

Jalonny Billingsley described Bell as adaptable. He is focused on the field, yet amiable off it. “He’s entertaining,” Billingsley said. “During games, he works hard. He has great footwork and knows how to redirect plays. He’s a true leader.”

According to 247 Sports, Bell is one of three Simeon players ranked in the top 50 prospects for the 2027 recruitment class in Illinois, alongside Randolph and defensive end Brian DeMoss. Bell has received 16 Division I offers, including ones from Indiana, Miami, Missouri, Kansas, and Arizona State.

Bell’s father, also named James, was a standout running back at Harper during the 1990s, coached by Terry Lewis. Bell said he inherited more than a nickname. “My father has been my coach, trainer, and mentor,” Bell stated. “He inspired me and shaped who I am.”

Bell began his high school football career at Morgan Park but switched to Simeon. “The change was tough, but I believed this was a better fit for me,” he remarked. “During my sophomore year, I learned the system and became a leader. Now, it’s my time to shine.”

As a sophomore, Bell showed outstanding promise and excitement in his play. Coach Sinque Turner praised Bell’s consistency and ability. “He plays beyond his years,” Turner noted. “He’s hard to bring down and possesses great contact balance. He opens space for our talented receivers.”

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Bell is built to run between tackles and burst to the edge. His training in boxing and wrestling has enhanced his balance and control. Off the field, Bell has varied interests. “My dad is from the South, and we love fishing together,” Bell shared. He also developed a keen interest in chess since third grade. “Chess demands strategic thinking,” he explained. “I’m quiet generally, but sociable among friends.”

Turner envisions significant growth for Bell, who shows untapped potential. “He had junior-level tape as a sophomore and excelled last year,” Turner commented. “Baby James lives up to his reputation and brings fresh energy.”

Bell is committed to advancing as a receiver and blocker. “I feel I’ve enhanced my game this year,” he said. “I can accomplish anything.”
