Authorities in Virginia announced the arrest of Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the son of Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy, after the alleged shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy. Mia, who is married to the Kansas City offensive coordinator, was found with multiple gunshot wounds at their home in Ashburn, Virginia. She was transported to the hospital and is currently in stable condition.
The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office reported that Elijah Bieniemy was charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing.
Eric Bieniemy, who was with the Chiefs at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday, was absent for Monday’s closed workout. The team released a statement expressing condolences to the family while respecting their privacy.

Bieniemy has been a key figure in the Chiefs organization since joining in 2013. He played a significant role in the team’s success, contributing to their Super Bowl victories. Although he sought head-coaching positions, Bieniemy was consistently overlooked. He spent time with the Washington Commanders and other teams before returning to the Chiefs this season as the offensive coordinator.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Bieniemy for his leadership qualities and work ethic, highlighting his positive impact on the team.
Eric Bieniemy’s current focus remains on preparing the team for the upcoming season, with the full-squad workout scheduled at Missouri Western State University.
